Looking For Alaska

My favourite book I have ever read, what a hard question. For a long time I used to read book after book, while life doesn’t provide enough time for that anymore, I have read quite a few books. I really loved the book Looking for Alaska by John Green, the book drew me in with its mysterious vibe that presented itself on the cover. The book follows Miles, a boy who is fascinated with last words, and his journey away from his home town where he has no friends, to a private school where he meets some amazing people with some bad habits perhaps. The book is a coming of age  novel, mixed with real tragedy. The harsh reality of the novel really made me connect with the book. It reminded me of how cruel our world is, and really grasped the reality many teenagers live in. Without spoiling anything, I would strongly recommend this book to teenagers especially, but anyone in general. This book is one I can read and reread because I just love the characters and the writing in general. 10/10 ...

Favourite Book Assignment

For the past year or so my favourite book has been Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. It was and still is an amazing read. The book is based on Beauty and the Beast but with a large twist. In the book there's talk about Greek Mythology, curses, and demon attacks. In the book it is said that demons lurk in the shadows and attack the weak. "Demons are made of shadow. Don't look at the shadows too long or a demon might look back." One of the major saying in this book that I have to admit, made me terrified to look at dark corners for weeks. The main female character Nyx was sacrificed by her father to marry the evil ruler of her kingdom. The Prince, aka evil ruler, is told to be a demon lord and a demon himself.  No one's ever seen the ruler and absolutely no one knows his name. I love the way the book was written and how from the first few pages it gets you thinking about how it's all goi...

Favourite Book

When it comes to reading I usually enjoy every book I pick up. I tend to get really deep in the book and have a hard time putting it down. Overall I would have to say my favourite book I have read so far would be The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. To sum it up The Kite Runner  takes place in Afghanistan before and when the Taliban takeover. It's about a young boy (Amir) and the servant's son (Hassan) winning a kite tournament. In the story, the kite tournament plays a very significant part as you read on. After the kite tournament, Amir witnesses Hassan being sexually assaulted by the neighborhood bullies in an alleyway. Amir now has the choice to save Hassan or save the winning kite to rekindle a relationship with his father. This decision changes the whole book and the story becomes very unpredictable. Personally, I got too attached to this book (I cried a little) but other than that I really enjoyed this book and would recommend this to everyone.

Holly's Scorpio Races

My favourite book to date is probably The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. THis book is about a small island in the Atlantic, where the sea around the island is inhabited by carnivorous water horses, called capall uisce (COP-ple ISH-ke, plural is CAP-ple). And each autumn there is horse race on the island, with these capaill uisce. They are wild and dangerous and people always die at the races, but they are what attract the people from the mainland. One girl, Puck, enters the race on her land horse Dove to win money so her brother will not leave her. Sean Kendrick, four time winner, wants to win this time so he can quit his job and truly own the capall he has a connection with. This is my favourite book for a number of reasons. I have always loved horses ever since I was a little girl and I loved horse lore even more. Stiefvater often deals with Celtic mythology, which is often unheard of in our society, but just as weird and entertaining as the Greek mythos. This book alternat...

Class Assignment - My Favourite Book

There are many books I've read over the years that I've enjoyed very much, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be  I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. This book is about a girl named Poppy, who loses her antique engagement ring in a hotel fire drill and has her phone stolen soon after. When she finds an abandoned phone in a recycling bin and begins to read its messages and emails, she finds herself becoming closer to the phone's owner, Sam, when she starts to keep him updated on all the information being sent to his phone while she is borrowing it to use as a contact number for anyone who may find her lost ring. What I like most about this book is the clever, light-hearted humor and the consistent turns of events. The reason this book is my favourite is because there are so many plot twists near the middle and end that I had not even slightly predicted were going to happen while I was reading it. It always makes you genuinely think one thing is going to ...

Keely's Favourite Book

I try my best to read as much as I can, before bed and what not. I recently purchased a book called Perfume by Patrick Suskind, I'm super excited to read it. Apparently it's a beautifully written novel but its also very dark. It is a story about a murderer but I don't wanna go into detail cause I don't know much about it yet. If I had to think about my favourite book it would probably be Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. If you haven't read the book you've probably seen the movie. The book is about a 15 year old boy named Charlie who writes letters to someone who is unknown throughout the book. His story is about his traumatic past, the suicide of his friend and his aunt who died in a car accident on her way to get him his birthday gift. It is a very good read, very relatable and it talks about everything. I really recommend reading it or at least watching the movie if you haven't seen it!

Seymour's Favorite Book

My all-time favorite book would have to be The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. I came across this book back in the 11th grade. The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir and his journey for redemption after framing his childhood best friend Hassan to avoid the shame of watching him being raped and bullied and doing nothing about it.     This is my favorite book because it gives you a history lesson, and teaches you to be a better person. The protagonist is very inspiring. Regardless of what he did in his past, he acknowledges that it was wrong and is trying to fix it. In order to overcome his shame, he goes as far as adopting a child! I think that is very honorable. To go along with the awesome book there is a movie that portrays the characters perfectly!      The techniques that the author used to pull me in were foreshadowing and suspense. An example would be at the beginning of the book when Amir gets a call that s...

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (Class Blog Assignment #1) - Oksana

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price–and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone… A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first. If there was ever a book that seamlessly combined vivid world-building, a fast-paced plot and beautiful writing, it's Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, and its sequel, Crooked Kingdom. What really takes the cake, though, is the duology's characters, so that's what I'll tell you abo...

EWC 4U - Class Blog Assignment 1 - Favourite Book

I realized upon reading the prompt that this blog would be quite difficult to write as I don’t actually have a favourite book. I’ve read too many and like them all for very different reasons. However, if I had to choose one that I like just a little bit more than all the others, I would have to choose Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. This book is the first of a series that has six books and a novella (with more books to be coming soon) but I like the first book best because it sweeps the reader into the story where the author sets the stage beautifully for the rest of the series. The first book follows the journey of a teenaged assassin by the name of Celaena Sardothien. She lives in a corrupted kingdom with a ruthless, dictatorial ruler and, as the tale progresses, she makes unlikely friends and uncovers a conspiracy it the thick of her challenges and adventures. I think I like this book just a little more than the many, many others novels I have read because the characters are so e...

Favourite Book

Favourite Book - Sheridan Gaboury I first started watching the Sherlock series when I was 12 and I found the series on Netflix, I have watched and looked forward to every season since then. I really love the way that you can see how Sherlock solves the crimes in his head and you can get somewhat of a feeling of how it would feel to be a consulting detective. I always knew about the original Sherlock Holmes books and it had been on my books-to-read list for a while but I didn’t actually get to it until this summer when my friend gave me a full set of all the original Sherlock Holmes books for my birthday. I would have to say that A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be my favourite book in the series and otherwise. It is the first book of the series and it introduces the characters all really well. For those who have never watched the show, Sherlock, it takes place in the modern age, they use technology a lot of the time to help solve the crimes, an...

Assignment #- Favourite Book

My favourite book is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Funny enough, this was actually a book given to my class that we had to read back in elementary school. The story is about a 13 year old, Brian Robeson whose parents have divorced. His mom lives in New York, and his father in Northern Canada. As he journeys on a small Cessna (plane), to his father’s for the summer the pilot has heart attack and the plane crash lands in the wilderness. Brian learns to survive using only his hatchet- a departing gift from his mother. Being that I love camping and exploring outside, this book naturally peaked my interest. Reading about different experiences brian went through inspired a younger me experiment on my own- even building a bow and arrow from a tree branch and shoelace. After having read this book for school, I picked up other books in this “series,” and Hatchet being the only book I’ve ever reread; I don’t like to read books a second time because then I know what’s coming. Gary Paulsen used s...

Class Blog Assignment #1- Favourite Book

I've read so many books throughout my time it's hard to keep track and remember them all (which is a shame), but I'd have to say that my favourite book is "On the Jellicoe Road" by Melina Marchetta. Immediately after I finished the novel, I ran out to the store to buy my own copy so I could mark my favourite passages and quotations. The story is a very unique concept which is kind of hard to explain in my own words while doing the book justice--even the summary blurb doesn't do the best job. It's one of those books you have to experience for yourself to really understand the appeal. But I'll link the description if you are interesting in checking it out . I found that the author has a very effective writing style so that the words flow naturally as you read, creating an atmosphere that makes it seem like you are actually in the story yourself. Throughout the novel there are two stories told in an almost flashback-style of writing. The further yo...

Favourite Book

I usually enjoy every book that I do read, because it's a whole different world I get to indulge  in and experience. My most enjoyed book so far would probably be  And Both Were Young by Madeleine L'Engle. Although it was a book I read in grade school, it appeals to me still today because of the wonderful memories it has left me with. It really caught my attention to how much of an impact details can make within a story. It was about a young American girl who was sent to boarding school in Switzerland after her mother died. It takes place around the late 1940's; I really adore reading books that take place in the past, because I do find myself to be a golden age thinker most of the time. More importantly, it allows me to connect with the people before us; their life and culture. What really made me content when reading the novel was the descriptive scenery the author would paint in my mind. I remember her describing the trains in the Swiss/France Mountains to be slitherin...
Sydney Henhawk 2017/09/20 Favorite Book Post My favorite book that I’ve read is called A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. As funny as it is, I judged this book by it’s cover. The design’s vibrant colors and cartoon like style drew to look more into it. I then read the summary on the back and was intrigued by the unique setting and two-in-one story style. This book takes place in two locations which is very unique. Though most of book takes place in Japan, it does go to America and even Canada. The characters as well go through hardship and I love following them through these problems and seeing how they overcome them. For instance, the main character Nao Yasutani has trouble adjusting to both Tokyo and America because of her constant moving. It’s interesting to see how she interacts in different lands. The author is able to make the setting very believable. While reading...

Ms. Yallup's fav book What is your favourite book? In order to become a writer you will need to read, read read!  According to Stephen King, "if you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that." Hopefully you come to this class as a reader if you want to be a writer, however, not all of you may read as often as you like.  In today's fast paced society with a long list of built in distractions (video games, phone, twitter, tumbler etc.), we find less and less time to read, myself included.  In order to become a better writer though you will need to read as much as you can in the genres that you are interested in reading/writing in so that you can learn from the best.  Today's blog serves two purposes--one to get you thinking about books and a time in the past when you loved to read.  Secondly, it gives us a chance to get to know each other and see who we might have something in common with.  Add your...

Welcome to our class blog

Here you will keep your writing journal.  You will both post responses to topics given by the teacher and engage in free writes to improve your skill and creativity.  Please create your blog and share it in the link provided in the course.  Remember the first rule of writer's class--what happens in class stays in class. Many times a topic or freewrite might wander into touchy subjects, this is our safe place--no one shares anything written in here with anyone from outside of our family/class.
