EWC 4U - Class Blog Assignment 1 - Favourite Book
I realized upon reading the prompt that this blog would be quite difficult to write as I don’t actually have a favourite book. I’ve read too many and like them all for very different reasons. However, if I had to choose one that I like just a little bit more than all the others, I would have to choose Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. This book is the first of a series that has six books and a novella (with more books to be coming soon) but I like the first book best because it sweeps the reader into the story where the author sets the stage beautifully for the rest of the series. The first book follows the journey of a teenaged assassin by the name of Celaena Sardothien. She lives in a corrupted kingdom with a ruthless, dictatorial ruler and, as the tale progresses, she makes unlikely friends and uncovers a conspiracy it the thick of her challenges and adventures. I think I like this book just a little more than the many, many others novels I have read because the characters are so engaging. It was Celaena, the main character that I was most drawn to. For example, when she is first introduced, Celaena is only a year older than I, which for one, makes her more related to me, even though she runs a road far different than mine. For two, she is a character who has been through so much in her lifetime, which makes her relatable because we have all been through some challenge at some point. Though I have never been an assassin's protegé nor a slave, I feel as if I can relate to Celaena as a character as a whole because her emotions are so real. We have all experienced fear, anger, sadness, and despair which helps us connect. Overall, I think it was the way Maas painted her as a character that keeps me coming back over and over again to read these books.
I loved Throne of Glass, too! I like that she's deadly capable in her ruthless trade, but that she's also her own person and not just a walking trope of badass ladies. I like that she has a bottomless appetite, especially for cake (relatable, amirite?), and that she likes to wear pretty things, and that she coos at her beloved dog. She's compassionate.
ReplyDeleteHow did you feel about the complete change the series went through in Queen of Shadows?
Everything that happened in that book was basically a plot twist for sure, but I guess that's good, when an author can keep their readers interested in a story through never ending twists and turns, preventing the book from becoming boring.
DeleteTo answer your question, I actually enjoyed the complete change the series went through because it all just seemed to fit, like all the pieces of the puzzle were just falling into place. I think everything that happened in the three books before Queen of Shadows was leading up to all those changes and the reader only sees it once they start looking back.
I love the character development that happens in the book too. From Aelin embracing her identity to getting re-acquainted with Aedion. Also, I love Rowan; he's honestly my favourite charcter, and was the moment we first met him. So that being said, I obviously loved it when he found Aelin in Rifthold, and I loved that we, as readers, got to know him outside of the leash Maeve kept him on.
How about you?
