Censorship

I believe that both sides of this argument have very valid points, and as it has been mentioned censorship is an extremely touchy subject. I believe this is mainly because it's seen as an omission of information. Whether it's for good or bad people take this as something being hidden from them or they get offended from the information received. This is where I'd have to take the side of there being too much censorship as I find we live in a bubble wrapped society, whatever happened to the saying, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Firstly, the article about killing a dinosaur, although I can maybe understand where the weapon concern came from, I still found absolutely ridiculous, especially since 1. Dinosaurs don't even exist anymore (sorry if I offended anyone's stuffed dinosaur???) and 2. The punishments were still upheld even after he had been searched for weapons. And being completely honest, the attention this students writing has received only proves, that he definitely made it interesting.

The other article that bothered me was the writer's craft assignment. Perhaps, their course is done differently than ours but I would have thought the teacher would have been more accepting towards the students' expression, after all, writing is an art form. Perhaps, since the teacher does have a very valid reason to be concerned, they could have brought this up with the students and maybe guidance councilors or parents before this situation went public.

Lastly, the article that made the kids cry actually really interested me because I had a similar scenario occur when I was in seventh grade. In my case, it was to a lesser degree and I actually thought it was really creative what the teacher did. He told us a story about himself and allowing our minds to fill in the lacking details with that of our own. Again, in this situation, I think it was a good idea but the seventh graders may have been a bit young for it. It may have worked better on grade elevens or twelves.

Comments

  1. I agree, some of the situations should have been more understanding, creative writing should be a freeing and safe experience, which in the case of these articles were restricted and given punishment for their creativity.
