Favourite Book Assignment

       

                    For the past year or so my favourite book has been Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. It was and still is an amazing read. The book is based on Beauty and the Beast but with a large twist. In the book there's talk about Greek Mythology, curses, and demon attacks. In the book it is said that demons lurk in the shadows and attack the weak. "Demons are made of shadow. Don't look at the shadows too long or a demon might look back." One of the major saying in this book that I have to admit, made me terrified to look at dark corners for weeks. The main female character Nyx was sacrificed by her father to marry the evil ruler of her kingdom. The Prince, aka evil ruler, is told to be a demon lord and a demon himself.  No one's ever seen the ruler and absolutely no one knows his name. I love the way the book was written and how from the first few pages it gets you thinking about how it's all going to end. Will one of them die? Do you find out the Prince's name? Does Nyx forgive her father for choosing her twin sister, mom, and aunt over her? One thing that drew me into the book was how the author Hodge, took one of the most well known stories and twisted it into a different version that was set in a different world with darkness and mystery and of course had a few mythology stories. Another thing that drew me into the book was Nyx. She wasn't your average nice main character. She had a backbone and knew when to be brave. Rosamund Hodge is definitely one of my favourite authors, her books are so well written and are also based on well known fairy tale stories which make them amazing page turners.

How Far is Too Far?

The freedom of speech seems like a basic human right. Though, some areas of the world have took this right away from their people. Here in Canada, it is obvious we fully approve of the freedom of speech by this being one of our greatest qualities, and one many are attracted to. It is hard to think that even the most accepting country has it’s limits. There are many cases where students and even teachers have been punished for what they have said. In many of these cases, there are just unpopular opinions, not even presented in a hurtful manner. As a student and citizen of Canada, I do believe all should have the freedom to speak, even if that is on a controversial topic.
