Class Blog Assignment #1- Favourite Book

I've read so many books throughout my time it's hard to keep track and remember them all (which is a shame), but I'd have to say that my favourite book is "On the Jellicoe Road" by Melina Marchetta. Immediately after I finished the novel, I ran out to the store to buy my own copy so I could mark my favourite passages and quotations.

The story is a very unique concept which is kind of hard to explain in my own words while doing the book justice--even the summary blurb doesn't do the best job. It's one of those books you have to experience for yourself to really understand the appeal. But I'll link the description if you are interesting in checking it out.

I found that the author has a very effective writing style so that the words flow naturally as you read, creating an atmosphere that makes it seem like you are actually in the story yourself. Throughout the novel there are two stories told in an almost flashback-style of writing. The further you get in the novel the more the connections between the two stories are shown, until all of the pieces fall into place at the end.

I found it very interesting to slowly learn more about the characters as more was revealed between the multiple stories, almost like a mystery since you don't know the significance of certain things until discovering them later on. Another great book "The Beach Trees" by Karen White, has a similar format with a mystery element and two stories flashing back to different times.

I am very excited to read all about everyone's favourite books, and I'll most likely add them all to my reading list since I love to find new favourites!

  1. If you like the flashback, and adventure style stories, I highly recomend the The Last Thing I Remember, by Andrew Klavan. It's part of the Homelander series, and grabs your attention right away. The book literally opens with this average teen waking up, strapped to a torture chair, and all he rememebers is going to bed normally the night before. I won't say anymore incase you decide to read it, but I highly recomend giving it a try! :)

  2. Yeah I love how we get to know characters very slowly, as if it's real life. If you like mystery books, Agatha Christie has some great ones. :)
